Christmas day of 2019 proved to be a rather memorable occasion as we steamed south towards the Antarctic through the Drakes Passage. I was really looking forward to the albatrosses on this trip having seen none until this trip. Black-browed Albatross is the only albatross species recorded in Ireland to date and still have a near mythical status here. Seeing one of these monsters in status and in actual physical size passing by an Irish seawatching point would be a dream come through for most serious Irish birders.
Up to this point on the cruise we had recorded five species - Atlantic Yellow-nosed, Black-browed, Sooty, Southern Royal and Wandering. We also picked up three Grey-headed Albatross today. We would pick up another five species before the end of the cruise. I was really impressed by the Great Albatrosses (Wandering/Royal complex) in particular. Black-browed Albatrosses were dwarfed compared to them and I couldn't get enough of them. They were probably my most photographed birds of the trip. Given the large number of shots I'll just cover the albatrosses in this post with the rest to follow.
